About the Project 🎯

I undertook this project while I was working for Zomato. Zomato, is India’s leading food delivery
& discovery platform with over 70 million app downloads.

Context

A lot of our users relie on reviews to try new food and restaurants. With the number of restaurants increasing day-by-day, it’s very crucial to make ratings more precise and accurate. This let's users make better decisions while trying new restaurants / dishes.

Problem Statement

How might we incentivise and create a quick and accurate way of giving reviews to ensure people help others make better decisions while ordering food.

Outcome ⭐️

  • Shipped this in a month, including development. Was shipped with speed. ⚡️

  • This let users make informed decisions while selecting a new dish / restaurant.

I only want to see the final experience

The Problem

PROBLEM 1

We realized the existing rating system took a lot of time to fill and people were just filling the review to finish it quickly. The reviews were not accurate.

PROBLEM 2

This was only affecting the overall rating. While trying new dishes or restaurants people were looking for more detailed and accurate reviews

Creating an experience which asked specific questions that would help you determine the taste and quality of the dish is what we were looking for.

Humanizing the experience

Users don’t comprehend ratings and unable to relate it to quality, Users experience emotions not ratings. We wanted users to put in what they were feeling and use this to help them voice their opinions. We kept a few points in mind while solving this problem

USING EMOJI’S

Emoji can help users to express themselves. This will help them comprehend ratings better

DIVE DEEPER INTO DETAILS

Asking specific questions about
food could help determine it's quality

SLICK AND EASY EXPERIENCE

Creating a quick and easy experience
which doesn't take time.

Process and Iterations

At Zomato we mostly followed agile methods of shipping new features. With constant reviews & feedback and some usability tests with fellow colleagues we were able to refine our design to ship it within a month.

ITERATION 1

With the sliders although we were
able to design a concise flow, it was
lacking details about the dishes

ITERATION 2

We felt this iteration there too
many types of UI Elements. This
might lead to lots of confusion.

ITERATION 3

In this option we felt users weren’t able to express their emotions, & with this new widget would also take a lot of time for users to get used to

Final Design

The design shipped was a totally new experience. Users could now give detailed reviews by just tapping a couple of times on the app. We decided to divide the complete experience inot 3 parts. This would also let users only fill what they wanted to.

Learnings and improvement ideas going forward

ADDING ANIMATION TO THE EMOJI’S

I would have loved to make lotties for the emoji’s and animate them if given more time. That would make this flow more engaging and expressive

SHOW GALLERY OF UGC CONTENT ON REVIEW PAGE

I believe showing photos and videos upfront of the most popular reviews could be a game-changer on this platform. Users in India like to gain a sense of trust before spending their money on it. This would be an idea which could be shipped in a V2 or V3 since it would require a lot of engineering bandwith.
